Nursultan Nazarbayev seeks to devote rare breaks in his work to his favourite activities, which are both rest and entertainment for him. These are communication with nature, sports, music and reading. It has been well said that to have a rest for a wholesome person is just to change the type of activity.
Nature
Nursultan Nazarbayev was born at summer high mountain pasture of Zailiyskiy Alatau. That is why the flavours of mountain herbs, wormwood in the parching steppe and the orchard he took care after together with his father – followed him all his childhood and youth. Love for native land, its fauna and flora, his strong desire to visit the most beautiful places of dear Kazakhstan even for a short while and to commune with wild life became a part of his own nature.
Music
Music plays an important role in the life of the First President. Elbasy’s parents always liked and could sing. His mother Alzhan Nazarbayeva sang especially beautiful. Her son inherited her talent undoubtedly. Young Nursultan listened to and sucked in different songs and tunes both ancient and modern from his childhood. Nursultan Nazarbayev plays dombra and sings himself at his leisure time. It is well known that the First President composed three songs and became a co-author of the Republic of Kazakhstan Hymn text.
Poems for the song "Shubarat" were written by the First President of Kazakhstan in 1973 during his work in Temirtau and narrate about love for the native land.

The second patriotic song of Bekbolat Tleukhan “Zherym menyn”, written in the words of Elbasy N. Nazarbayev, has a much more complex structure. This song is mainly performed during festive concerts, high-level official ceremonies. The lyrics of the song glorify native lands with pride, there are notes of sincere feelings for the immense country. The piece is performed with a wide lyric range and high pathos.

The song “Ushkonyr” considered the fruit of the joint creative work of the First President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and the famous Kazakh composer, people's artist Altynbek Korazbaev, it is a work in which it is told about the filial love of Elbasy to native lands. The lyrics of the song impressively describe sincere feelings for places close to and dear to the heart.

The song of the famous singer Bekbolat Tleukhan “Elym Menyn”, written in the words of the First President, is an outstanding work that occupies a special place among the Kazakh songs on a patriotic theme. The basis of the song was the boundless joy experienced by the Kazakh people after receiving the long-awaited independence. The song “Zhuldyzym” by Sugirali Saparaliev written on the words of akyn Israil Saparbayev became widely known among the people in the 1970s and 1980s. “Zhuldyzym”, which got the love of young people of that time, was often performed both during festive feasts and on large stages. Known since the early years of the First President, “Zhuldyzym” is one of the songs that Nursultan Nazarbayev listens to with particular ravishment.
Abay (Ibrahim) Kunanbayev (1845 - 1904). The great Kazakh akyn was born in the former Semipalatinsk region. Abay made a special contribution to Kazakh music with his songs. Since childhood, absorbed the beauty of folk music, he used both the best musical traditions and new artistic and expressive means in his works, thereby greatly enriching the Kazakh song art.
The song “Beu, Ayday” is a good example of Kazakh folk music, which has a long history. This work has a great educational meaning. Widespread song among the people tells about the transience of life, the importance of communication and respect for a person.
“Saulem-ay” is one of the most beautiful melodic songs popular among the people. The musical work is distinguished by affecting the feelings of lyricism, prudence and playfulness. Having a deep meaning, it is performed both on the large stage and at home.
